Is it safe to use spot-on flea treatments in pregnant or lactating bitches?

I am asked this a lot in the pharmacy and the answer is not straightforward. Most summaries of product characteristics for pipettes containing fipronil, imidacloprid or permethrin state that use in pregnant or lactating females should only be under veterinary supervision. Some active substances can pass into the milk or cross the placental barrier. My recommendation is always to speak to your vet before applying any spot-on during pregnancy or lactation, especially in the first few weeks.

Can I combine a spot-on flea treatment with a flea collar at the same time?

In general I do not recommend combining two antiparasitic products without veterinary supervision, because you may be duplicating the same active ingredient or combining substances that have not been evaluated together. For example, using a collar with permethrin and a pipette that also contains permethrin can lead to excessive exposure. If you feel that the spot-on alone is not enough, speak to your vet first to assess whether the problem is resistance, poor application or another factor.

Why does my dog still have fleas after applying a spot-on?

I am asked this very often and there is almost always an explanation. Spot-ons kill the fleas that are on the dog, but around 95% of fleas live in the environment: carpets, sofas, bedding. If you do not also treat the home with an environmental spray containing an insecticide/acaricide, your dog will keep getting reinfested. Also check that application was correct, directly onto the skin and not just on the coat, and that you did not bathe your dog within the following 48 hours.

What should I do if my dog licks the area where I applied the spot-on?

If you notice your dog trying to lick the application site, act quickly. The correct area is on the back of the neck or between the shoulder blades so they cannot reach it. If your dog does manage to lick the product they may show hypersalivation, vomiting or restlessness depending on the active ingredient. In that case call your vet or an animal toxicology centre. To prevent this, apply the pipette well onto the cervical area and watch your dog closely for the first 30 minutes.
