Apivita: análisis farmacéutico de la marca griega que lleva 47 años haciendo cosmética con abejas

Apivita skincare: pharmacist review of the Greek bee-powered brand

"Apivita is one of the few brands where, when you read the label and check the website, everything matches. The philosophy is not marketing stuck on the front: it is inside the product, in the traceability of the honey and in the bioclimatic factory where everything is made. In skincare, that is not the norm."

DATO CLÍNICO

In 2023 Apivita had a turnover of €57.9 million, with 14% growth. Its two main markets outside Greece are Spain and the United Kingdom.

47 years, two pharmacists and a beehive

Athens, 1979. Nikos and Niki Koutsianas decided to create something in their dispensary back room that simply didn’t exist in Greece at the time: serious natural skincare. The inspiration was twofold: the bee colony as a model of cooperation, and the Hippocratic approach that treats health and beauty as part of the same whole. That’s where the name comes from: apis (bee) + vita (life).

47 years later they have around 300 products, presence in 54 countries, a bioclimatic factory in Markopoulo and B Corp certification since 2017—without losing (as far as I can tell) coherence with those founding principles.

In 2017 PUIG took a majority stake; in 2023 it completed the full acquisition. The question I’m always asked is: is Apivita still Apivita? Yes—where it matters. Headquarters, R&D and production remain in Markopoulo. The formulas haven’t changed. What improves with a larger group behind it is availability through online pharmacy channels.

What makes Apivita different

Apivita skincare is a Greek dermocosmetic brand built around bee-derived ingredients (such as honey and propolis) combined with Mediterranean botanicals.

Some brands put “honey” on the packaging but the concentration is tokenistic. With Apivita, the apian ingredients—honey, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax—are used at meaningful cosmetic concentrations and appear clearly on the INCI rather than being hidden away.

Propolis is a compound bees make by mixing plant resins with their enzymes. It has documented antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity. A review in Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine (Toreti et al., 2013, PMID: 23737843) supports its use as a mild topical antiseptic, with flavonoids (pinocembrin, galangin) and phenolic acids (CAPE) showing antioxidant activity in in vitro skin models.

The second pillar is Mediterranean plants with genuine pharmaceutical tradition: Sideritis scardica, olive, rosemary, pomegranate. Apivita works with local producers and harvest traceability. It doesn’t sell generic “herbal extract”: it specifies origin—which matters if you care about quality control.

B Corp certification isn’t handed out lightly. They achieved it in 2017 with 155.2 points (the median score for assessed companies is 50.9). The bioclimatic factory in Markopoulo uses solar energy and water recycling. More on B Corp standards at bcorporation.net.

Pharmacist’s note: “Natural” is not the same as “hypoallergenic”. Some products contain essential oils (lavender, rosemary, mountain tea) at typical cosmetic concentrations. If you have active atopic dermatitis or a confirmed allergy to any botanical component, read the INCI carefully. The Bee Sun Safe Hydra Sensitive range and fragrance-free products are generally the safer options for very reactive skin.

The four categories where it genuinely competes

1. Technical haircare

This is their strongest area. The shampoos I dispense most often are: Hyaluronic Hydra (honey + hyaluronic acid for dehydrated or chemically treated hair), Anti-Hair Loss Men / Women (mountain tea and hydrolysed proteins) and the oily or dry scalp Anti-Dandruff options (climbazole + mountain tea). They’re solid for maintenance—even if they don’t quite reach truly “technical” Ducray territory.

2. Propolis-based skincare

The propolis & lime cleansing gel for oily or combination skin is one of those cleansers people repurchase repeatedly—worth noting if you’re looking for Apivita reviews that reflect real-world use rather than hype. Propolis acts against Cutibacterium acnes and can modulate local inflammation: it won’t replace dermatological treatment for moderate-to-severe acne, but as cosmetic support for oily skin with occasional breakouts it can make a noticeable difference.

3. Face and body sun protection

The Bee Sun Safe line is a pleasant surprise: broad UVA/UVB filters, non-sticky textures, no white cast. The Hydra Sensitive SPF50 version competes with La Roche-Posay Anthelios on a hypoallergenic profile. The ultra-light SPF30 Hydra Melting spray is one of the few pharmacy sunscreens that doesn’t leave your face feeling “soft” for an hour afterwards.

4. Lip care

The most accessible product category in the brand: propolis lip balms, pomegranate, chestnut. They last for months, protect and repair without that heavy waxy feel—one reason Apivita tends to do well in pharmacy even when people don’t buy into full routines.

Total honesty: For high-intensity anti-ageing (clinical retinol, advanced peptides), Medik8 or SkinCeuticals deliver more. For dermocosmetics aimed at active pathology—significant eczema flares or moderate-to-severe acne—the more appropriate choices are usually Avène, Bioderma or La Roche-Posay.

Who it’s designed for (and who it isn’t)

✅ You like “natural”, but you still want results

You read INCI lists, greenwashing irritates you, and you know formulation matters. Apivita is made for you: serious cosmetics with a natural philosophy that doesn’t contradict itself.

✅ You want a brand with clear values and DNA

You care about B Corp status, solar-powered manufacturing and supplier traceability. Apivita has been doing this since 1979—without shouting about it in every advert.

⚠️ You have very reactive skin or active dermatitis

Essential oils can irritate very sensitive skin. Start with Bee Sun Safe Hydra Sensitive or fragrance-free products. In an acute flare phase you’ll usually do better with Avène or Bioderma.

⚠️ You want high-intensity anti-ageing

The Wine Elixir, Black Bee and Queen Bee lines sit in the mid-range. If you need clinical retinol or advanced peptides, Medik8 or SkinCeuticals will typically give you more visible results.

How to fit it into your routine without making a mess of it

1

Start with just one category

If your goal is haircare, try one shampoo for 4 weeks before adding a mask. If it’s facial care, start with the cleansing gel first.

2

Add a low-risk entry product

The propolis lip balm or a single-use face mask lets you test the brand’s “DNA” without committing much budget—useful if you’re deciding what’s best to buy from an online pharmacy UK-style basket.

3

Build from what’s already working for you

If you love the shampoo, add the mask from the same range. If the cleanser suits you well, add a serum from that line next. You reduce the chance of mixing actives that don’t play nicely together.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is Apivita skincare really natural skincare or just marketing?

Apivita skincare is genuinely natural, within what the term realistically allows. It has been B Corp certified since 2017, its products contain between 86% and 100% ingredients of natural origin depending on the range, and the traceability of the bee-derived ingredients is real. It is not 100% organic across the whole catalogue, but it sits much closer to honest natural skincare than to greenwashing.

Is Apivita still a Greek natural skincare brand after PUIG bought it?

Yes. PUIG is the Spanish group that has owned it since 2023, but the headquarters, the bioclimatic factory and R&D are still in Markopoulo, near Athens. The products are still formulated and manufactured in Greece. The ownership changed; the industrial DNA did not.

What is the best-selling Apivita skincare product in pharmacies?

In our pharmacy, the shampoos are the real workhorses. Hyaluronic Hydra and Anti-Hair Loss Woman move very fast. In facial skincare, Bee Sun Safe SPF50 Soothing Face stands out in spring–summer. And as an entry product, the propolis lip balm is a true classic.

Is Apivita suitable for sensitive skin?

In general yes, but with nuances. The Bee Sun Safe Hydra Sensitive line and alcohol-free products are designed for reactive skin. You do need to be careful with products that contain essential oils at higher concentrations (some in the catalogue) if your skin is very sensitive or you have a tendency to dermatitis or atopic dermatitis.

How does Apivita compare with Weleda or Klorane as a natural skincare brand?

All three are positioned as natural skincare, but with different philosophies. Apivita is beekeeping plus Greek flora and is a B Corp beauty brand. Weleda is German anthroposophy, more austere, with more organic certifications. Klorane is French botany, very strong in technical haircare in pharmacies. On price, Apivita sits between Klorane (more affordable) and Weleda (more expensive).

Where should I start if I have never tried Apivita before?

Start with the propolis lip balm. It costs around €4, lasts for months and captures the brand’s DNA in its simplest product. If you like the taste and texture, you avoid the risk of starting with a €35 serum. The natural second step is the Hyaluronic Hydra shampoo.
