Mejores suplementos para la piel: los 4 que sí funcionan

Best skin supplements: the 4 that actually work

The 'skin supplements' category is full of noise. The ones that work combine the right ingredient, a real dose and enough time. I have reviewed formulations, searched for published studies and filtered for what really works in practice. — Jorge Peláez, Pharmacist and Nutritionist

CLINICAL NOTE

Proksch et al. (2014) demonstrated in a double-blind trial that 2.5 g/day of hydrolysed collagen for 8 weeks significantly improved skin elasticity versus placebo in women aged 35–55 years.

The one with the strongest evidence? For firmness and hydration from within, Imedeen Time Perfection.

Do skin supplements work?

Best skin supplements only work when three conditions are met: an ingredient with human studies, a meaningful dose and enough time. Hydrolysed collagen needs between 2.5 and 10 g a day to show effects in the dermis, and Polypodium leucotomos (Fernblock) at least 240 mg for its photoprotective effect. Below those figures, the product is decorative.

Quick summary

  • Most evidence for firmness and hydration: Imedeen Time Perfection.
  • Oral sun protection with tanning support: Heliocare Bronze.
  • Hair, skin and nails together: Solgar Skin, Nails and Hair Formula.
  • Affordable entry into collagen: Innovage Piel Colágeno Plus.
  • Minimum useful collagen dose: 2.5–10 g/day. A 200 mg tablet does nothing.
  • Minimum time before judging: 8–12 weeks of daily use.
  • What none of them replaces: topical sunscreen.

I will be direct: this category is full of noise. Miracle collagens, vitamins in doses that do not reach anything, formulas with fifteen ingredients where none of them hits an effective dose. I have spent more than a decade watching trends come and go at the pharmacy counter and what always remains is the same: correct ingredient, real dose, consistency.

The four filters I use before recommending anything

  • Evidence in humans: studies with objective measurements — dermal hydration, elasticity, collagen density. I take in vitro data into account, but it is not enough.
  • Real dose, not symbolic: Proksch et al. (2014) established with a double-blind trial the useful range for hydrolysed collagen. If the label does not reach it, it is out.
  • Mechanism explained: if the manufacturer does not explain what their product does in the dermis, there is reason to be suspicious.
  • Adherence: a supplement you have to take three times a day will not be followed. And what you do not take consistently does not work.

And one nuance that is worth being clear about from the start: this is not cosmetics. An oral supplement works by providing precursors or protecting against oxidative damage from within. Taking collagen is not the same as taking oral sun protection, even if both come in a box and are swallowed.

The 4 skin supplements I actually recommend

1. Imedeen Time Perfection — the one with the most studies behind it

Imedeen Time Perfection is the skin supplement with the most published literature behind it, with trials that measured dermal density by ultrasound and hydration by corneometry. Its base is the BioMarine marine complex together with vitamin C, zinc and tomato extract.

I recommend it from around 40 years of age when your priority is firmness and overall skin quality rather than one specific dark spot. Two tablets a day with food, and review at 12 weeks — not before.

2. Heliocare Bronze — oral sun protection with tanning support

Heliocare Bronze combines Fernblock (Polypodium leucotomos) with beta-carotene and lutein. Fernblock has clinical evidence in photoimmunoprotection: it reduces UV-induced oxidative damage from within.

This is what I suggest before and during holidays, starting 15 days before sun exposure. One important warning I always give: oral sun protection complements but never replaces cream. If someone plans to drop SPF because they take capsules, the recommendation stops making sense.

3. Solgar Skin, Nails and Hair Formula — a well-built all-rounder

Solgar Skin, Nails and Hair Formula provides MSM, L-lysine, L-proline, vitamin C and zinc: the precursors your skin uses to synthesise collagen and keratin. Solgar is a brand with high quality standards and you can see that in the formulation.

This is my choice when the goal is not just skin: also nails that break easily and fragile hair. Pack of 60 tablets for roughly one month of use.

4. Innovage Piel Colágeno Plus — an affordable way into collagen

Innovage Piel Colágeno Plus is collagen powder, and that format is precisely its advantage: it lets you reach a real daily gram dose, something impossible in a single capsule. On top of that it adds hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, which is a necessary cofactor for collagen synthesis.

This is the option with the best price-to-dose ratio on this list, and the one I recommend if you want to start without spending too much but still take an amount that actually does something.

Which to choose for your goal?

  • Firmness and overall skin quality from about 40: Imedeen Time Perfection.
  • Summer, beach or very sun-sensitive skin: Heliocare Bronze, starting 15 days beforehand.
  • Skin + hair + nails: Solgar Skin, Nails and Hair Formula.
  • Tight budget but real collagen dose: Innovage Piel Colágeno Plus.
  • If you are only going to do one thing for your skin: daily topical sunscreen. No capsule beats that.

If you are particularly interested in collagen supplements for skin and want to understand which forms exist and which are better absorbed, I go into detail in the real benefits of collagen. And if your main goal is sun protection, I cover the topical side in the best facial sunscreens.

How to take them so they actually help

  • With food: better tolerance and better absorption of fat-soluble ingredients.
  • Consistency for at least 8–12 weeks: dermal turnover is slow. Before that there is nothing solid to assess.
  • A photo at the start: natural light, same time of day, same place. Memory is unreliable.
  • One at a time: if you take three things and something improves, you will not know which one worked.
  • Avoid doubling up on vitamin A or zinc if you already take a multivitamin.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or underlying conditions: check first with your healthcare professional. Especially with high-dose beta-carotene.

Pharmacist recommendations

My order of priorities for skin has not changed in ten years: daily sun protection, not smoking, sleep — and then only after that comes a supplement. If you reverse that order, the supplement is working uphill.

That said, in the right context they do add something: better hydrated skin, slightly firmer texture, improved sun tolerance. With realistic expectations, three months of consistency and without abandoning your cream, most people notice a difference.

If you are unsure which fits your situation best, send us a message or drop into the pharmacy. Asking costs nothing and saves you buying two products that do essentially the same thing.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best skin supplements from the pharmacy in 2026?

For mature skin (40+) with loss of firmness, IMEDEEN Time Perfection is the one with the most published clinical evidence. To reinforce sun protection and prevent photoageing, Heliocare Bronze or Heliocare Oral have the strongest support. The choice depends on your age, your goal and your budget — there is no single universal winner.

How long do skin supplements take to work on the skin?

Published studies show objective results from 8–12 weeks with continuous use and adequate doses (at least 2.5 g/day of hydrolysed collagen). Firmness and elasticity improve before deep wrinkle reduction, which requires 4–6 months. Without consistency, there are no results — I get asked this a lot and my answer is always the same.

Does oral sun protection replace sunscreen?

No. Oral sun protection (Heliocare, Fernblock) complements topical SPF but does not replace it. It acts as a second line of antioxidant and photoprotective immune defence, but it does not block UV photons like a sunscreen. Always use topical SPF plus a supplement, never one of the two on its own.

Can I take collagen supplements for skin and oral sun protection at the same time?

Yes, they are complementary mechanisms and there are no known interactions between hydrolysed collagen and Polypodium leucotomos. In fact, many patients combine a supplement such as IMEDEEN or INNOVAGE with Heliocare Oral in summer: synthesis plus protection at the same time. Check with your pharmacist if you are taking other medicines.

Do skin supplements help with acne or only with ageing?

They are mainly designed for ageing, firmness and hydration. Zinc (present in some formulas) does have evidence in mild to moderate inflammatory acne. For active acne, specific zinc supplements or topical treatments with azelaic acid or niacinamide have stronger support. The supplements on this list are not indicated as an anti-acne treatment.

When is it best to take skin supplements: morning or night?

It depends on the product. IMEDEEN and INNOVAGE Colágeno Plus are generally taken with meals to improve absorption. Heliocare (oral sun protection) is recommended 30–60 minutes before sun exposure. Solgar Skin, Nails and Hair can be taken with any meal. Always check the specific product leaflet.
