Heliocare 360º D Plus: fotoprotección oral con vitamina D para personas activas

Heliocare 360 D Plus capsules: oral sun protection + vitamin D

In the pharmacy, the Heliocare 360º D Plus duo is what sells most from May to July. Anyone who already knows that oral sun protection requires consistency knows that the duo format is the smartest decision. But before you buy it, let me explain exactly what each capsule does — and what it does not do.

DATO CLÍNICO

Fernblock+ has been shown in controlled studies to reduce the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) in keratinocyte DNA after UV exposure. EFSA sets an upper tolerable intake level for vitamin D3 of 4000 IU/day in adults; the dose in this product (1000 IU) is well below that threshold.

What is Heliocare 360 D Plus and how does it differ from the rest of the range

HELIOCARE 360 D Plus Duplo 2x30 Capsules is an oral sun protection supplement made by Cantabria Labs. Its base is Fernblock+—a standardised extract of the tropical fern Polypodium leucotomos—combined with nicotinamide (vitamin B3) and vitamin D3 at 1,000 IU per capsule. The “duo” pack covers 60 days at a better cost per dose.

The “360” isn’t just marketing: the support works on several fronts at once—antioxidant, immune-supporting and cellular photoprotection. It isn’t a classic sunscreen filter; it works from within, complementing your topical sunscreen. Complementing, not replacing. That distinction matters.

The “D Plus” is what sets it apart from standard Heliocare 360: it includes vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) at 1,000 IU. The better you use sunscreen, the more you reduce skin synthesis of vitamin D. This product aims to address both in one step.

Fernblock+: the active ingredient that makes it different

Fernblock+ is a standardised aqueous extract of Polypodium leucotomos, with decades of dermatology research behind it. It helps limit UVA/UVB-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS), protects DNA from photodegradation and modulates inflammatory skin responses. Studies published in Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine (Middelkamp-Hup et al., 2004) showed significant reductions in minimal erythema dose (MED) and cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) formation. Fernblock isn’t a sunscreen filter: its value is intracellular protection.

Why they add vitamin D3 to oral sun protection

Vitamin D3 is synthesised in the skin when UVB acts on 7-dehydrocholesterol. Any sunscreen with SPF ≥15 significantly reduces that synthesis. A meta-analysis in the British Journal of Dermatology (2019) confirmed that consistent sunscreen use can be associated with insufficient 25-OH-vitamin D levels, especially in people with limited direct sun exposure. The 1,000 IU of D3 per capsule (500% of NRV) helps maintain reasonable levels without approaching EFSA’s adult tolerable upper intake level of 4,000 IU/day.

What are Heliocare 360 D Plus capsules for: evidence-based benefits

1

Reducing cumulative sun damage

In vivo studies show that taking Polypodium leucotomos extract before sun exposure reduces erythema formation and DNA damage. Middelkamp-Hup et al. (2004) demonstrated a significant increase in MED after 15 days’ use. It isn’t an immediate effect.

2

Immune-modulating support

UV radiation suppresses cutaneous immune response—a mechanism linked to premature ageing and carcinogenesis. Fernblock helps preserve Langerhans cell function and reduces production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α) after UV exposure.

3

Antioxidant support with nicotinamide

Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) has its own evidence base as a photoprotective nutrient. The ONTRAC study (NEJM, 2015) showed a 23% reduction in actinic keratoses with 500 mg twice daily in high-risk patients. The dose in Heliocare is lower, but it contributes to the overall effect.

4

Maintaining vitamin D levels

The 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 partially compensates for reduced skin synthesis caused by correct use of topical sunscreen.

Heliocare 360 D Plus capsules are an oral sun protection supplement that supports your skin’s defences from within—but they do not replace topical sunscreen. Capsules don’t create a protective film, they don’t have a measurable SPF, and they won’t prevent burning if used alone. Their role is a second line of cellular defence, helping reduce oxidative damage that can still occur even when SPF is applied properly. Complement, not replacement. I mean that.

⚠️ Heliocare 360 D Plus does NOT replace topical sunscreen. Always use it alongside an appropriate SPF product, not instead of one.

Full ingredients: what’s inside each capsule

There are plenty of oral sun protection supplements with laughably low doses of Polypodium leucotomos. That isn’t the case here. Each capsule contains:

Fernblock+ (Polypodium leucotomos aqueous extract): 240 mg. This is the dose used in published clinical studies. The extract is standardised in phenylpropanoids and flavonoids—without standardisation, dosing isn’t reproducible.

Nicotinamide (vitamin B3): 50 mg. The form of niacin without the flushing effect. It has photoprotective properties and supports DNA repair with independent evidence.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): 1,000 IU (25 mcg). A highly bioavailable form of vitamin D. It helps cover the gap created by good SPF habits. If you have a diagnosed deficiency (<20 ng/mL), this dose won’t correct it—you need specific treatment under medical supervision. This product is for maintaining levels, not for bringing someone out of established deficiency.

Excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide. Gluten-free and lactose-free according to the manufacturer. The capsule shell may be gelatine or HPMC depending on batch—if you need a vegan version, confirm directly with Cantabria Labs.

If you have a blood-test-confirmed vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL), speak to your doctor: 1,000 IU/day may be insufficient to correct it.

How to take Heliocare 360 D Plus capsules: dose, timing and duration

1

Daily dose

Take 1 capsule daily with breakfast. Fat in your breakfast improves Fernblock+ bioavailability.

2

Start early: 15 days before

Fernblock doesn’t work acutely. Start around 15 days before your first intense sun exposure—not on the same day you get on the plane. The effect on erythema threshold requires prior build-up.

3

Treatment duration

Continue throughout your period of higher sun exposure (typically late spring through early autumn). The duplo pack covers exactly those 60 days.

Special groups and precautions

Lighter skin phototypes (I and II) tend to get more value from oral photoprotection as an extra layer. So do people taking photosensitising medicines—tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, thiazides, oral retinoids—although I always recommend discussing this with your prescriber first if you’re unsure about interactions.

Be cautious with vitamin D3 if you take anti-epileptics, glucocorticoids, rifampicin or colestyramine: they affect vitamin D metabolism. Stated contraindications include hypersensitivity to any component, active hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia. In pregnancy and breastfeeding: not without medical advice.

⚠️ Do not exceed 1 capsule per day unless medically advised. If you take anti-epileptics, corticosteroids or digoxin, speak to your doctor before adding supplemental vitamin D3.

Heliocare 360 D Plus vs the rest of the range: which should you choose?

The 360 D Plus suits people looking for maximum internal photoprotection with immune support plus vitamin D. In my practice I consider it most relevant for phototypes I–II; people with a history of actinic keratoses or visible photoageing; and those undergoing active dermatology treatments (retinoids, peels or laser).

The Heliocare Bronze  contains beta-carotenes and carotenoids aimed at more even tanning, without vitamin D3 or nicotinamide. It can make more sense for phototypes III–IV with otherwise healthy skin or for anyone already covering vitamin D via another route. If you know you’ll use at least two consecutive months, the duplo pack usually makes financial sense—the saving versus buying two separate packs tends to be around 15–18%.

Oral sun protection supplements: what does the science actually say?

Well-evidenced: Polypodium leucotomos extract increases MED in controlled trials—real but modest gains often reported around ~50–80%. That’s not comparable to topical SPF50+, which multiplies protection by around fifty-fold. They’re different orders of magnitude. It also reduces DNA damage markers (CPDs) in skin biopsies fairly consistently across studies.

Still debated or weaker evidence: prevention of melanoma or basal cell carcinoma in humans hasn’t been demonstrated in long-duration trials. Benefit in vitiligo is documented as an adjunct to primary medical treatment. And some research has been funded by Cantabria Labs—which doesn’t invalidate results, but it does mean you should read critically.

An honest conclusion: Heliocare 360 D Plus has genuine scientific rationale behind it. It isn’t an “empty” supplement dressed up in good packaging. Used correctly—alongside SPF50+ topical sunscreen, protective clothing and avoiding peak UV hours—it fits into a complete strategy. That’s all there is to it.

No single-piece strategy exists. Oral plus topical—always.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can Heliocare 360º D Plus interact with other medicines?

Overall, tolerability is good and no clinically relevant interactions have been described with most commonly used medicines. However, there are two situations you need to bear in mind: if you take digoxin or other medicines that can be affected by raised calcium or vitamin D levels, or if you are already taking vitamin D supplements on prescription, there is a risk of accumulation. Nicotinamide at high doses can potentiate the effect of certain antidiabetics, although at the doses in this product this is unlikely. My recommendation is that you mention it to your doctor or pharmacist if you take chronic medication before starting.

What is the best time of day to take Heliocare 360º D Plus?

Ideally you should take it in the morning, with breakfast or just before your first sun exposure of the day. That way Fernblock+ will be circulating in plasma during the hours of highest UV radiation (generally between 10:00 and 16:00). Vitamin D3 is better absorbed in the presence of fat, so taking it with a meal that contains some fat — toast with olive oil, a full-fat yoghurt — improves its bioavailability. If one day you forget it in the morning, take it with lunch, but avoid taking it at night because it loses part of its practical usefulness for the following day.

Is it safe to take Heliocare 360º D Plus if I am already supplementing with vitamin D?

It depends on the total dose you are taking. Heliocare 360º D Plus provides 1000 IU of vitamin D3 per day, which is a reasonable maintenance dose. If you also take a specific vitamin D supplement prescribed by your doctor, you may be exceeding 2000–4000 IU per day, which with prolonged use can approach levels that require monitoring. Serum 25-OH-vitamin D should be between 30 and 80 ng/mL; above 100 ng/mL there is a risk of toxicity. If you have a prescribed vitamin D regimen from your doctor, ask them whether it makes sense to combine it with this product or whether it would be preferable to choose standard Heliocare 360º without the D.

Is Heliocare 360º D Plus suitable for very sensitive skin or rosacea?

Yes; in fact oral sun protection is especially useful for reactive skin and rosacea, because sunlight is one of the main triggers for flare-ups. Fernblock+ has a documented anti-inflammatory profile that can help modulate the skin response to heat and radiation. It does not contain perfumes or topical allergens because it is taken in capsules, which removes the skin tolerability issues that some cream sunscreens cause. That said, if you have active rosacea or are being treated with antibiotics, dermatology therapies or isotretinoin, always discuss adding any supplement with your dermatologist to make sure it fits into your treatment plan.
