Inmunoferon price: formats, doses and when to use it

Every autumn I get the same question: “Jorge, is Inmunoferon worth it or is it just marketing?”. And every autumn I answer the same: it depends who it is for and which format you choose. This guide is exactly that — the real numbers per dose, all the formats on the table, and in which cases it actually makes sense to spend the money.

What Inmunoferon is and what it contains

Inmunoferon is a food supplement from Laboratorios Ern (Stada group) whose active ingredient is AMG – a proteoglycan fraction obtained from the cell wall of the non-pathogenic yeast Candida utilis. Each capsule provides 50 mg of AMG. Inside there are mainly β-glucans and mannoproteins that activate macrophages and dendritic cells via the Dectin‑1 receptor, modulating the innate response without triggering uncontrolled inflammation. That makes it an immunomodulator, not a blunt immune stimulant.

It is gluten free, lactose free and colourant free. I mention this because some coeliac patients go straight to the Inmunoferon price without checking the composition – and then come back with problems.

How AMG works: what the science says

The β-glucans in AMG bind to the Dectin‑1 receptor on macrophages, dendritic cells and neutrophils, activating the Syk/NF‑κB pathway and regulating cytokine production in a balanced way. A clinical trial published in Clinical Nutrition (Talayero et al., 2019) evaluated AMG in oncology patients on chemotherapy and found a significantly lower incidence of opportunistic infections in the treated group. It is the most cited study, with good reason.

In healthy people the evidence is more modest – and I prefer to state it like that. There are small trials suggesting shorter duration and lower severity of upper respiratory tract infections, but there is no high‑quality meta‑analysis in healthy adults. The evidence is promising but incomplete. That is the honest position.

The strongest clinical evidence comes from studies in immunosuppressed patients; in healthy people trials have smaller sample sizes.

Who Inmunoferon is worth it for (and who it is not)

Profiles where I find the cost–benefit balance reasonable: people with more than 4–5 upper respiratory tract infections per year; over‑50s with a physiologically reduced innate response; school‑age children with recurrent infections (junior syrup); and people going through periods of intense physical stress – endurance athletes, prolonged exam periods, postoperative recovery without immunosuppressants.

Profiles where they are unlikely to notice much difference: healthy adults under 40 who get one or two bouts of flu a year like most people; those already taking other immunomodulators with yeast β‑glucans or medicinal mushrooms (duplicated mechanism); or anyone looking for a substitute for an antibiotic or antiviral. Inmunoferon acts in prevention, not as treatment for established infections.

Relative contraindications: active autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis in relapse) – always speak to your doctor first. There are no data in pregnancy or breastfeeding: use is not recommended as a precaution.

Dose and schedule

The usual adult schedule is 2 capsules per day on an empty stomach for the first month, then 1 maintenance capsule until the end of winter. With the 90‑capsule bottle this fits almost exactly. With the junior syrup, give 5 ml per day – do not mix with hot liquids (>40 °C), as this can degrade the active protein fraction of AMG.

No toxicity has been documented at recommended doses and there are no relevant known interactions with vitamin D, zinc or vitamin C. Where you do need to be careful is in patients on immunosuppressive treatment (tacrolimus, ciclosporin, methotrexate). In those cases the combination needs medical supervision.

In patients taking pharmacological immunosuppressants, always check with their doctor before starting Inmunoferon.

Preguntas frecuentes

How much does Inmunoferon cost in UK pharmacies?

At Farma2Go: Inmunoferon 90 Capsules €28.14; Junior Syrup 150 ml €21.63; Duplo 2x90 Capsules €52.50; Orodispersible Tablets 30 units €19.66; Flulenza Throat Spray 20 ml €9.29. In high-street pharmacies the price can vary — as a food supplement it is not subject to a fixed retail price.

What is Inmunoferon used for?

It is an oral immunomodulator based on AMG, a proteoglycan fraction from the cell wall of Candida utilis. It activates macrophages and dendritic cells of the innate immune system to improve the response against infections, especially respiratory infections. It is not an antibiotic or an antiviral: it works in prevention, not in the treatment of infections that are already established.

When should I take Inmunoferon and for how long?

Typical regimen in adults: 1–2 capsules per day on an empty stomach. The usual approach is to start in October with 2 capsules per day for the first month and then drop to 1 capsule as maintenance until the end of winter. Three‑month cycles are the most commonly used. No toxicity has been documented at the recommended doses.

Does Inmunoferon have side effects?

It has a favourable safety profile — no relevant side effects have been documented. On rare occasions, mild gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, bloating) can occur if taken on an empty stomach. People with active autoimmune diseases should speak to their doctor before taking it.

What is the difference between Inmunoferon capsules and Inmunoferon Junior?

The capsules are for adults (50 mg of AMG per capsule). The Junior Syrup is designed for children from 2 to 12 years, with a dose adapted to paediatric weight in liquid format. Usual dose: 5 ml per day. Do not use adult capsules in young children without dose adjustment supervised by a paediatrician.

Is it worth buying the Inmunoferon duplo pack?

If you are going to cover the whole season (October–March) or you are buying it for two adults in the same household, the duplo 2x90 at €52.50 works out better value: the cost per capsule drops from €0.31 to €0.29, almost €4 saved. For a one‑off one‑month cycle, the bottle of 90 capsules is enough.
