What is the difference between the various AHAs?

Molecular size drives penetration. Glycolic (smallest) penetrates more, more effective but more irritating. Mandelic (largest) more superficial and better tolerated. Lactic in between and also hydrates.

How long does an AHA take to work?

Radiance and texture: 1-2 weeks. Mild pigmentation: 4-8 weeks. Pores and fine lines: 8-12 weeks. Consistency matters more than high concentration.

Is SPF essential when using AHAs?

Yes, always. AHAs increase UV sensitivity for several days. Without daily SPF 50 the effect reverses: increased risk of pigmentation and photoageing.

Can AHAs be combined with retinol or vitamin C?

With retinol in alternating routines, never the same night. With vitamin C in separate routines or products formulated to combine them, space by 10-15 minutes.

What is the difference between AHAs and BHAs?

AHAs water-soluble, work on the surface: texture, pigmentation, radiance. BHAs such as salicylic acid oil-soluble, penetrate the pore: acne, blackheads, oily skin.

Can AHAs be used during pregnancy?

At low concentrations (5-7%) generally acceptable, check with your gynaecologist. Above 10% not recommended as a precaution. Alternatives: niacinamide, peptides and azelaic acid.
