Celimax Retinal Shot opiniones: análisis farmacéutico del retinol K-Beauty (2026)

Celimax Retinal Shot review: pharmacist's take (2026)

Retinaldehyde (retinal) is the form of vitamin A that converts directly into retinoic acid. Being able to apply it to the skin at 0.1% in the pharmacy channel with Matrixyl 3000 and niacinamide alongside it is rare. But it only works with consistency and daily SPF.

CLINICAL NOTE

Retinaldehyde at 0.05–0.1% is comparable in efficacy to retinol at 0.3–0.5% (Sorg O. et al., Dermatology).

Not sure between the Celimax 30ml and the 15ml Booster? Both use Korean 0.1% retinal; the difference is starter format vs full bottle. Here I explain which fits you best based on your previous experience with retinoids: see the 30ml product page.

The Celimax The Vita-A Retinal Shot is one of the few 0.1% retinal serums in pharmacy channels with a declared concentration. Retinal — not retinol — converts directly into retinoic acid and works around 3–10 times faster. Here I break down the formula, how to use this mosquito repellent–strength active without irritating your skin, with the Booster 15ml as an entry step and the Serum 30ml for people who already tolerate retinoids.

Quick summary:

  • Active: 0.1% retinaldehyde (retinal).
  • Supporting formula: 3% Matrixyl 3000, 1% panthenol, niacinamide.
  • Formats: Booster 15ml (starter) · Serum 30ml (regular use).
  • Use: night-time, 2–3 nights/week in the first phase, then increase gradually.
  • Visible results: after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
  • Non‑negotiable: daily SPF 30+.

What is Celimax The Vita-A Retinal Shot and what is it for

Celimax is a Korean brand with dermatological formulas and declared actives. Its The Vita-A line revolves around retinaldehyde, rarely seen in pharmacy channels. It is a night serum for firmness, texture and fine lines.

  • Category: night-time anti-ageing serum with a cosmetic retinoid.
  • Profile: normal, combination or oily skin starting retinoids or wanting to maintain results.
  • Key difference vs retinol: retinal needs only one enzymatic conversion (to retinoic acid), not two → it acts faster with less irritation.
  • Regulatory framework: within Regulation (EU) 2022/1181 applicable to retinoids.

Retinol vs retinal: the fine print

Many people use "retinol" and "retinal" as if they were the same thing. They are not. Retinal sits one step further along in the vitamin A cascade.

  • Retinol: two enzymatic conversions before it becomes retinoic acid. More steps, fewer molecules reaching the target form.
  • Retinal: only one conversion → more efficient.
  • Equivalence: 0.05–0.1% retinal ≈ 0.3–0.5% retinol.
  • Tolerance: at low concentrations, retinal tends to irritate less than an equivalent strength of retinol.
  • Reference: Sorg et al. (Dermatology, 2014) show clinical improvement with 0.05% retinaldehyde in photoageing with low irritation.

If you want to go deeper into the active itself, read my detailed retinal guide, or compare it directly with retinol here: retinol starter guide.

Full composition: what each active does

The formula has four declared key players:

  • 0.1% retinaldehyde: main anti-ageing active. Stimulates type I collagen and speeds up cell turnover.
  • 3% Matrixyl 3000: signalling peptide complex. Increases endogenous collagen and hyaluronic acid without adding irritation.
  • 1% panthenol: vitamin B5. Helps repair the barrier and reduces flaking.
  • Niacinamide: vitamin B3. Reduces redness, supports the barrier, evens out tone.

This is classic K‑beauty logic: a potent active surrounded by soothing ingredients. If your skin is very sensitive, the Celimax Noni Energy Ampule is a good entry point without retinal.

Booster 15ml vs Serum 30ml: which format fits

The same 0.1% retinal, the same Matrixyl, different volume.

  • Booster 15ml: starter format. Lasts around 6–10 weeks at 2–3 nights/week. Ideal to test the active without committing to a full-size bottle.
  • Serum 30ml: double the size bottle. Lasts around 3–4 months of regular use. Best choice if you already tolerate retinal well.
  • Cost-efficiency: per ml, the 30ml works out at roughly half the unit cost of the 15ml.
  • My recommendation: first retinoid → start with the Booster 15ml. Already tolerate retinoids without irritation → go straight to the Serum 30ml.

How to use Celimax Retinal Shot step by step

If you skip a structured protocol you are likely to get irritation and give up. My suggested schedule:

  • Weeks 1–4: use twice a week on non-consecutive nights. Half a pea-sized amount for the whole face.
  • Weeks 5–8: increase to 3–4 nights per week if your skin is coping well.
  • From week 9 onwards: nightly use if no irritation has appeared.
  • Application: on slightly damp skin (improves penetration), wait 2–3 minutes, then seal with moisturiser.
  • Sandwich method: moisturiser → retinal → moisturiser on top. This reduces irritation without cancelling efficacy.
  • Mornings: SPF 30+ is non‑negotiable. Retinal increases photosensitivity.
  • Nev er combine in the same routine: retinal + AHA/BHA · retinal + pure vitamin C · retinal + another retinoid.

Mild flaking in the first 2–4 weeks (often called "retinal purging") is physiological. If it appears: space applications out more, double down on moisturiser, keep SPF strict.

Who it suits and who it does not

  • A good fit if: you are roughly 25–55 years old, have normal/combination/oily skin without marked sensitivity, want to start a retinoid without a long commitment, are concerned about firmness or texture, and already use daily SPF.
  • I do not recommend it if: you are pregnant/breastfeeding, have rosacea or active atopic dermatitis flares, are using prescription tretinoin at the same time, or cannot commit to daily SPF.
  • Softer alternative without retinoid: Celimax Noni Energy Ampule.
  • Premium alternative with more clinical data behind it: Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3.
  • Mature skin (60+): good as maintenance but usually not enough as monotherapy. Combine with more advanced peptides.

My unfiltered opinion as a pharmacist

I will be direct. The Celimax Retinal Shot is one of the best retinal serums I dispense in practice. A true 0.1% retinal with Matrixyl 3000 and niacinamide in pharmacy channels is still uncommon.

  • What convinces me: declared concentration, coherent K‑beauty formulation, two formats that cover different stages of use, pharmacy distribution with traceability.
  • The caveats: the name "Retinol Shot" confuses many people (it is retinal, not retinol); for very mature skin you will usually need to reinforce with other actives.
  • Who I tend to recommend it to: as a first retinoid without committing to a long treatment; people already using retinol who want more efficacy; K‑beauty routines pairing vitamin C in the morning with retinal at night.

Celimax Retinal Shot vs European alternatives

  • vs La Roche‑Posay Redermic Retinol : LRP uses traditional retinol. Celimax uses retinal (more efficient because of its more direct conversion), generally a touch gentler.
  • vs Skinceuticals Retinol 0 .3 : Skinceuticals suits experienced users; Celimax is better for introducing vitamin A into your routine.
  • vs Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Serum : BoJ is a botanical anti‑ageing serum. They complement each other — Celimax at night + BoJ Ginseng in the morning.
  • vs Medicube PDRN : completely different approaches. See my overview here: Top five PDRN products .

How long it takes to see results

    p
  • Weeks 1–2 : adaptation phase. Mild flaking if you start twice weekly.
  • p
  • Weeks 3–4 : skin gets used to it. Texture looks smoother.
  • p
  • Weeks 6–8 : first changes in fine lines and radiance. This is when many people wrongly assume "it does not work" and stop.
  • p
  • Week s12+ : clearer changes in superficial wrinkles and firmness.
  • p
  • Months 3–6 : maximum benefit consolidates.
p

Key rule: daily SPF is non‑negotiable . Without sun protection, any retinoid can worsen pigmentation. For options see my round‑up: Top five facial sunscreens .

Common mistakes with Celimax Retinal Shot

p
    p
  1. Starting every night from day one : barrier overload. Go gradually — twice weekly → three times → four times → nightly if tolerated.
  2. p
  3. Combining with vitamin C or AHA/BHA on the same night : unnecessary irritation. Vitamin C in the morning + retinal at night works well.
  4. p
  5. Skipping moisturiser after retinal : apply a nourishing moisturiser after about five minutes to reduce expected dryness.
  6. p
  7. Judging results after just one week : most visible changes come after several weeks of continuous use, not days. Influencer photos are usually after long‑term routines.

Frequently asked questions
